Most toys are composed of many different materials, making recycling a difficult task. Besides, the number of toys with low quality plastic or offered as merchandising gifts with little attention retention, is ever growing.
With no recycling solution in Portugal, at least 30 million toys end up in landfills or incinerated every year.
Replay is here to change this story!
Throughout 2021, Zero Waste Lab and Precious Plastic Portugal tested the first national circuit for collecting, separating and recycling end-of-life toys - mobilizing citizens, schools, businesses and local authorities, as well as Precious Plastic Portugal recycling labs in the partner municipalities of Évora, Lisboa, Cascais, Porto and Figueira de Castelo Rodrigo.
Six other locations joined the initial network, adding up 44 collection points in 11 towns spread across the country, alongside 120 partners across society.
We have proved that it is possible to divert end-of-life toys from incinerators and landfills. Now we need to evolve and sustain the REPLAY collection and recycling scheme. Shall we continue to rethink and reinvent toys and play?
